However women are particularly prone to pelvic floor muscle weakness after childbirth when stress incontinence is very common (leaking on coughing/sneezing or physical exercise) and during and after the menopause when changes to vaginal tissues caused by hormonal changes can affect bladder control. Pelvic floor muscle physiotherapy is aimed at women who have difficultly carrying out pelvic floor muscle exercises or who are experiencing difficulties with bladder and or bowel control or symptoms of a prolapse. Physiotherapy includes establishing that you can correctly contract the pelvic floor muscle followed by a progressive training program to improve the strength, endurance and co-ordination of your pelvic floor muscle.
